Knowledge Management

MBSI recognizes the value in knowledge management across the organization. Knowledge is woven into an employee's daily life and is difficult to harness and quantify. For an organization to be successful, it must be able to capture the knowledge and experience of employees, package it into training, and disperse it across the enterprise. The goals of the teams under the Knowledge Management umbrella focus on collecting MBSI knowledge and imparting it to new and tenured employees alike with the highest level of knowledge transfer. The teams work collaboratively with leadership and experts across the organization to improve communication and increase the collective knowledge for the benefit of MBSI and its clients.

The MBSI new-hire on-boarding training program is designed to provide a solid foundation into MBSI's Revenue Cycle Management. All newly hired employees attend an introductory training course that is designed give employees an understanding of the roles and functions of each department within MBSI and gain a deeper understanding of Revenue Cycle Management. After the introductory training period, employees will move on to their respective departments for continued training. Employees find rewarding experiences in our training programs as they are structured to provide a solid foundation of MBSI applications, connections, and overall functionality. Our goal is to ensure that all employees achieve a clear understanding their role in their individual team, and MBSI as a whole.

Coder Training

New coders are hired from external sources or via promotion from other MBSI departments. The objective of the 4-6 week coder training course is to impart upon the new coding staff the ability to review physician documentation in support of compliant application and appropriate assignment of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and ICD-9-CM codes, ensuring all federal, state and private payer statutes and regulations are met.

MBSI's initial coder training curriculum includes understanding the "anatomy" of a medical record, while coaching the staff in coding theory and application. For the first few weeks the new coders are trained on understanding the Evaluation and Management (E&M) levels, the history and physical exam components, and what constitutes medical necessity. They are also instructed on procedures, diagnosis, modifiers, and mid-level practitioner identification and coding.

Once the basics of coding are imparted, they move to the on-line coding system. They learn how to use Ecode, understand the financial classifications, identify provider signatures, capture missed ancillaries or a need to decrease an E&M level, etc. They learn how to suspend charts when there are questions on the chart, or a need for additional documentation. The new coders code approximately 220 charts in a training module.

Upon completion of the training course, they are ready to code "live" charts. A coding analyst is then assigned to them and all coded charts are reviewed to assess the understanding of coding theory and application. Once they consistently pass the quality assurance standard of 95%, they move full time into their assigned region. They continue to be assessed each month to review that the productivity and quality standards are met.

Throughout the year there is continual training on compliant coding updates, emergency medicine practices and government regulations. Certified professional coders (CPC) are offered the opportunity of earning continuing education units (CEUs), on site, through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).

Quality Assurance

The Quality Assurance team is responsible for auditing Billing and Reimbursement Operations at MBSI. Our goal is to ensure compliance with billing regulations and MBSI directed policies and procedures. The Quality Assurance Program focuses on denial prevention and is based on an employee’s productivity and level of employment. Our QA team provides consistent communication to the operations teams, and is flexible in making continuous improvements in quality, delivery, and service.

Learning Services

Learning Services is responsible for the design and development of training content for delivery both in-person and online. The team maintains training resources and oversees the Learning Management System (LMS) that houses online content. In partnership with Training, Quality Assurance, leadership and subject matter experts throughout the organization, Learning Services creates training content that provides employees with the resources and tools they need to perform at an optimum level and continually grow and develop in their career at MBSI.
